According to the American Library Association, "The Coretta Scott King Book Awards are given annually to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values."

Here at Free Period Press, we're all about making it fun and easy to prioritize what's most important to you.

We thought a checklist would be a great motivator to encourage you and the kiddos in your life to read and celebrate the incredible books that have won Coretta Scott King Book Awards.

While the award has been going strong for over 50 years, we limited this checklist to winners of the last 20 years because we found that some of the older books can be tough to find.
